It’s Time to Go Back to School

And we all know it.

Dr. Sara Cody, the health officer for Santa Clara County in the San Francisco Bay Area, made an announcement last Friday. It was not full of unknowns and possibilities like all of her other press conferences she’s participated in over the past 16 months or so. This was a clear and concise recommendation, that sounded more like an order.

“We are here today to urge, urge every school at every level to open their classrooms for full in person learning for all students.”

Is the pandemic over?

Will unvaccinated students have a choice to remain in distance learning?

What will be the protocol if there’s an outbreak at a school?

Just some of the repeated questions that came from a group of Bay Area reporters following the press conference. Most would think that these questions were unequivocally appropriate. And why wouldn’t you?

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Bay Area schools have been either closed or in a hybrid/blended model since March 13th, 2020. To try and comprehend the learning gaps and concepts lost during that time, is unthinkable. While middle and high school students may have been able to weather the storm, (as in my high level math class that basically taught themselves) elementary school…
